The icecream flight!

My son remembers a lot of little details! It is part of his autism OCD! Me on the other hand watches over him and never notices anything around me!

Lately I have taken up the task of noticing my surroundings! I am being more aware!

I have been to an icecream shop with my son with his group during summer! Usually I do not get anything for myself but just see to it that I am just a caretaker! But the last time I went, I noticed something on the board! They served ice cream flight!

If you do not know what an icecream flight is, it is four different flavors served on a tray!

Yesterday, me and my young man hit the shop again! I ordered the flight! Vanilla bean, death by chocolate, peanut butter swirl and strawberry were the flavors I chose! My son’s eye became big! He went into Mouna or silence! We both went into an icecream coma! It didn’t cost much just ten dollars but it was all worth the experience!

I definitely need to notice more things! People say autistic people are in their own worlds! But autistic caretakers are in the autistic people world and I need to start coming out of it!

The only disadvantage the next time we pass through tbis shop my son would have high expectations! We may do it but just need to walk it off! Next time would be two flights with eight different flavors 🙂! Anyone willing to give us company?

Oh they had waffle pieces as free toppings!
We walked it off at a nearby garden center! Boy! They have halloween stuff 🤷‍♀️!

  1. What a sweet reminder to slow down, notice the little joys, and enjoy them together! 🍦❤️

  2. Ganga ji, this is such a beautiful and heartwarming read!

First of all, give yourself a huge pat on the back—not just for being a devoted caretaker, but for making the conscious choice to step out of that “caretaker bubble” and notice the world around you again. That ice cream flight wasn’t just a $10 tray of flavors; it was a moment. The way you described your son’s eyes going big and falling into that “Mouna” (silence) says it all—you gave him an experience so overwhelming and joyful that words weren’t even needed. That is pure magic.

And I absolutely love your realization: “Autistic caretakers are in the autistic person’s world and I need to start coming out of it.” That hit deep. You deserve to enjoy life alongside him, not just manage it for him.

As for the high expectations next time—two flights with eight different flavors sounds like a delicious challenge! I’d gladly join if I could, just to see his face when that tray arrives. And walking it off at a garden center full of Halloween decor? That sounds like the perfect, grounding ending to a perfect outing.

Keep noticing, keep treating yourself, and keep sharing these little victories. You’re doing an amazing job, Ganga ji. 🍦👏

    1. Thanks 🙏!

  3. I’m glad you indulged in a treat for yourself – and I can see why your son’s eyes widened. 😍 Our world can feel and be so small when it’s consumed with our childcare. So it’s good to look up at times and for your own needs and interests too.

    1. We as parents need to take the effort!

  4. Ice cream has a special place in summer

    1. Yup it is 🙂!

  5. Very difficult to fight that temptation

    1. My next goal is to try eight flavors 🙂!
