Controlling our thoughts.

Daily writing prompt
What’s the best way to deal with negative thoughts?

I remember an old Tamil movie. A person is sitting in the marriage hall watching the bride and groom tie the knot. All of a sudden, he starts crying. When asked why, he replied what would happen if the bride’s saree caught fire to the lamp that is being lit? It could spread all around and he could die in the process. I was a little girl when I saw this movie. So much negativity with this person.

I studied insurance in school. You sell insurance based on something bad is going to happen. I have also heard financial planners talk about our future. Nothing is fun in their talk. If a person who has negative thoughts running in their minds talking to a financial planner or an insurance agent is not going to help them.

Going for a walk, talking to a good friend, looking at nature all helps deal with negative thoughts. I am not a pet person, but for many pets help when they are sad.

Personally, I love chanting shlokas (hymns in praise of the God) and going to the gym. In fact, when I look at those active people my brain releases endorphins.

These are the four hormones that cause our moods to swing back and forth. Here is the link if you want to know more.

Four Happy Hormones | Parkinsons NSW

Dopamine is the rewarding chemical. An example of this is celebrating a little win.

Oxytocin is the love hormone. Example of this is playing with the baby or a dog.

Serotonin is the mood stabilizer. Example for it is meditation.

Endorphin is the pain killer. Example for this is laughing or exercising.

We think of the brain as something that solves problems and being intelligent. But the neurons play a much bigger role. A science that needs more study to help more people who have depression, anxiety and other mental disorders.

Have a great July all.

  1. A very good post. There are really sone professions which thrive on negativity. Like lawyers. Happy July to you and your family.

  2. Well said. There is no single cure for negative thoughts. Finding what brings peace, whether it is prayer, exercise, nature, or a good conversation, makes all the difference.

  3. Ganga ! You have such a wise, observant soul. The fact that you took a confusing childhood memory, connected it to human behavior, psychology, and even neuroscience, shows a mind that doesn’t just see the world, but understands it. More importantly, you didn’t stop at identifying the negativity—you actively built a beautiful, holistic toolkit to counteract it (shlokas, gym, nature, friends). That takes incredible self-awareness and strength. You are exactly the kind of person who makes the world feel safer and more thoughtful, simply by being in it.

Have a truly magnificent July! May your walks be sunny, your gym sessions be powerful, and your shlokas bring you deep peace. 🌿
