When my son came out of the samd dune trail way ahead of me he was applauded by a couple. My husband who was waiting for him didn’t even wave to the couple just whisked him off to clean him. Yesterday we checked off our 18th National Park at Gread sandunes national park and preserve. The last one of our trip.
As I came out it was the wife I had a conversation at the visitor center. My husband didn’t know her and hence didn’t notice 🙂! She introduced herself as a special needs life skills teacher from Illinois and wanted to say hi to me. She also has a son closer to my son’s age who is on the spectrum. She said her son didn’t wamt to walk on the dune. I said, we want ours to walk the dunes but going to play it by the ear since he already had some fanta and dark chocolate and needs to burn off the calories.
Fast forward an hour, my young man walked a total of 1.3 miles on the sand with hard sandy wind hitting his face. He climbed the small dune up maybe around 150 feet and walked back down all the way making a pace faster than me.
As soon she saw me at the trail head, she commented “you did it”! I told her glad we had people to cheer at our finish line. It was a precious moment. The 1.3 mile sand dune walk took around 50 minutes and I would say it was worth the effort.
Taking a break day and leaving home tomorrow morning. Hopefully will make a travel journal tomorrow night as we saw so much and experienced so much on the trip.

By the way the pictures do not show the difficulty 😀!
