Education

Have you ever performed on stage or given a speech?

I never was a shy girl or an introvert! I participated in many competitions, recitations, both in English and Tamil growing up. I never won any prizes but I loved to do that!

I have to thank my Dad who constantly encouraged me. My Dadโ€™s work place had a lot of programs for kids and there were two speeches which I still remember. One was a pre written speech about the Great Mathematician Ramanuja. Ramanuja worked in Chennai Harbor and since my Dad worked there, they celebrated his centenary birthday! Another was a topic I wrote and made a speech about the harmfulness of smoking. This again was part of my Dadโ€™s officer club celebrations.

What do these have to do with my life now? All those experiences had me fluently speak in English. This helped me talk to so many doctors, specialists and attend so many school meetings. My son was diagnosed at New England Medical Center and had made number of visits to Mass General in Boston. These are two of the top most medical institutions and at that point as a young twenty five year old young Mother was able to sit in front of these doctors and converse. I was able to comprehend the doctor reports and school reports. I was able to read a lot online and from books and know more about my boyโ€™s problems. Was I fixing things? I do not know, but knowledge is power.๐Ÿ˜€

Education is not about just reading and writing. It is more about applying the same in life. I am glad I was given a good education by my parents to handle all this in my life!

Usually a blog gets attracted with pictures.โ€‚My Mom had given me a picture and I spent more time searching for the same than writing this one, but could not find it.โ€‚Just a note to self, if I do find have to save all my printed pictures in cloud!

    1. Education doesnโ€™t necessarily mean earning money or gaining a respectable position. It is even for handling real life unexpected situations and that is what my life taught me. Thanks for stopping by.๐Ÿ™๐Ÿ™๐Ÿ™

    1. Thanks! I would say we were immersed in English! We studied in English medium schools and our social and science subjects were much more heavy and we memorized so much in our Elementary school! We didnโ€™t do projects but our vocabulary grew stronger. We also continued to learn our Mother Tongue (mine was Tamil) until 10th gradeand Third language Hindi until 8th grade. I think all these really helped us. We also were not segregated according to our reading levels or given lower or higher class rooms. We all studied the same subject even if we werenโ€™t good at it.

      1. We need to do at least bi-lingual education in the U.S. It is so much easier to learn new languages when one is young!

      2. Definitely it needs to be done. I do not know why it is not pushed. I just started teaching Sanskrit to first graders online. These Indian kids live in North East US. It is part if their Hindu religion curriculum and I am amazed at their grasping and learning. It really opens the language pathways.
