Have you ever performed on stage or given a speech?
I never was a shy girl or an introvert! I participated in many competitions, recitations, both in English and Tamil growing up. I never won any prizes but I loved to do that!
I have to thank my Dad who constantly encouraged me. My Dadโs work place had a lot of programs for kids and there were two speeches which I still remember. One was a pre written speech about the Great Mathematician Ramanuja. Ramanuja worked in Chennai Harbor and since my Dad worked there, they celebrated his centenary birthday! Another was a topic I wrote and made a speech about the harmfulness of smoking. This again was part of my Dadโs officer club celebrations.
What do these have to do with my life now? All those experiences had me fluently speak in English. This helped me talk to so many doctors, specialists and attend so many school meetings. My son was diagnosed at New England Medical Center and had made number of visits to Mass General in Boston. These are two of the top most medical institutions and at that point as a young twenty five year old young Mother was able to sit in front of these doctors and converse. I was able to comprehend the doctor reports and school reports. I was able to read a lot online and from books and know more about my boyโs problems. Was I fixing things? I do not know, but knowledge is power.๐
Education is not about just reading and writing. It is more about applying the same in life. I am glad I was given a good education by my parents to handle all this in my life!
Usually a blog gets attracted with pictures.โMy Mom had given me a picture and I spent more time searching for the same than writing this one, but could not find it.โJust a note to self, if I do find have to save all my printed pictures in cloud!
