In a pickle

My raw mango has been sitting inside my refrigerator for more than a week now. It has been calling me to make use it. Raw mango pickle is the best accompaniment to thayir saadam or yogurt rice and it can be called the comfort food for most Tamil people. But the pickle has been my villain in my weight loss journey with the oil and salt content. Anything spicy tastes good with a good portion of oil. But today morning my cravings won over me and made this instant pickle during breakfast.

Pickles in Tamil are called oorugai and traditionally many will not be consumed immediately. Mangoes and Limes get drenched with oil salt and red chilly powder for nearly a month before they are consumed as a side dish. The more old the pickle gets it becomes more tasty. Store bought relishes or pickles cannot match home made ones. Sesame oil is used in South Indian pickles and Mustard in North Indian ones. (How much I took for granted those homemade pickles! Everything in life is so precious).

As I write my mouth waters thinking about the various pickles but my brain warns me about the heart burn. So who will win? I see even my husband who is not into pickles walk up and a put a piece into his mouth out of impulse so I think my taste buds are going to win and I am going to enjoy the same. 😊 Just a little warning to myself not to check my weight for the next couple of days. Remember it is a side dish to a very carbohydrate rich thayir saadam (yogurt rice)!

  1. That sounds so amazing! I’m a very salty type, as opposed to sweet.
I’ve been putting salt on pineapple for years! I also put salt on melon. Now you have me tempted to put in on mango as well.
