Being in another’s shoes

What’s something most people don’t understand?

There is a famous saying in my language. You can understand tooth ache and headache only when you experience it. What the proverb tries to say is we can talk about awareness and understanding others issues all we want but until you experience the same on a personal level it can’t be understood.

We have construction crew in our house and my son’s OCD and anxiety are at his peak. They removed my son’s toilet and has placed it on the front porch for renovation. Okay, if our light bulb goes off, we have issues, so remember the tantrum that followed this move. One of the crew member’s son is on the mild side of the spectrum. I would say that has helped us immensely. God answers prayers in different ways. This was one.

I am not a fan of awareness days and months. Since a disability or a right is not limited to a particular day or a month. It happens all year around for the affected party. Trying to understand other’s issues is what separates us from animals and I think we need to put in an effort to be a bit more understanding. God has blessed us in so many ways and we do not experience all the sorrows of the world, and we all needn’t experience every single thing to bring empathy out for others. But trying to understand can make all the difference.

  1. Great post Ganga, and great disability awareness. I agree with the disability statement entirely. I came to the conclusion long ago that many people don’t understand my disabilities. My thoughts are with you and your family. Is this post part of another challenge?

    1. Yes Katherine. This is Word press prompt of the day. The prompt shows up on my app as Prompt of the Day. Some prompts are good.

  4. Yes, the “ days” are fine to make people aware but we need to understand that it is something that cannot be limited to one day

    2. Sadie, I agree, and this can definitely not be limited to one day. So many of us live with the reality of disability, whatever type of disability that is every day. I have lots of these types of posts on my blog. I have Cerebral Palsy, Hydrocephalus and visual impairments. https://justkatherineblog.wordpress.com/2023/01/20/international-day-of-acceptance-2023/

  5. I think lack of empathy is one of the biggest issues we are facing in this country today. Hopefully your construction goes smoothly and quickly.

    1. When people are running behind money and luxury they loose the sight of many things. Maybe that is the reason for these awareness days. Thanks, we too are hoping things to go smoothly but it is going to take some time.

      2. Maybe you’re right Ganga. I hope everything works out. With every awareness day, I often don’t know what to add to my views about awareness days that I already have in my posts. I have a lot on my blog about life experiences and think life experiences create good awareness, so thanks for sharing your family’s experiences.

    2. I agree, there’s a huge lack of empathy. I experience this a lot with my disabilities of Cerebral Palsy, Hydrocephalus and visual impairments.

      1. That is such a darn shame. It takes so little effort to show a little compassion and empathy. So sorry.
