Navaratri 2026

Navaratri is celebrated nine days! On the tenth day is Vijayadasami. The good wins over evil! Every state and custom celebrates in a different way and my part celebrates with a Golu or doll display! Usually they are kept in odd numbers, three, five or seven!

I am humbly accepting I am a golu addict! So my display is beyond steps with multiple themes!

My original five step. Most of the dolls are more than 20 years old.

I had Kamakshi, Tapas Kamakshi and Kampa nadi Kamakshi! Story of how Parvathy came to the Temple city of Kanchi! My learning of Mooka Panchasati, a poetry made me arrange this section.

Mother Goddess is celebrated during these nine days and I have a collection of various deities from Temples all over India. Renukamba. Abhirami, Meenakshi, Annapoorni and Visalakshi.

The above pictures depict the story of Krishna! My new collection was Bheeshma, lying on an arrow bed surrounded by Pancha Pandavas!

Various scenes from our epic Ramayana, depicted here.

Life of Muruga, temples and various miscellaneous stories depicted here!

My son’s craft corner. I make a lot of crafts with my son and I try incorporate into my golu! This year we made birds! We stitched them and stuffed them! My mom on a video call told me casually “they need a tree@! The hunt began! I got this tree just two weeks ago! They just had mulberry lights. Long story short, it became Arasa maram or a peepal tree! A small Ganesh painted by my son took shelter under the tree! We also had made a lot of flowers from scratch, yes using plaster of paris, and along with a temple tank, they became the temple garden! A Devi Kamakshi temple also came along side and finished my son’s project with grace!

Here is what AI told me what Arasa mara Pillayar means:

Arasamara Pillayar (also spelled Arasa Mara Vinayagar) refers to an idol or shrine of Lord Ganesha (Pillayar)installed under a sacred Peepal tree (Arasa Maram) in traditional South Indian villages. [1, 2]

Key Significance

  • Sacred Tree: The Peepal tree (Ficus religiosa or Arasa Maram) is deeply revered in Hinduism as a symbol of the universe, divinity, and life. [1]
  • Village Landmarks: An Arasamara Pillayar shrine is a common sight in rural Tamil Nadu, often serving as a focal point for neighborhood prayers, community gatherings, and daily worship. [1]
  • Worship & Rituals: Devotees frequently perform pradakshinam (circumambulation) around the Peepal tree and offer prayers to Ganesha to remove obstacles (Vighnahartha), bring wisdom, and grant peace.[1, 2, 3]
  • Devotional Culture: The shrine has inspired numerous traditional Tamil devotional songs, albums, and folk hymns (such as Arasamara Pillaiyare and Arasamara Nayagane). [1, 2]
The entire scene

Marriage, baby shower, ear piercing of the kids along with a food service that are part of Tamil nadu culture exhibited here!

Nothing completes the golu without a cricket set!
