Oil!

The war really was about oil!

Too much politics around the world for thr control of world oil!

My problem is not oil outside the home but my cooking oil! Which one is safe and healthy? Food tastes so much better cooked in oil.

Olive and avocado oil are the best some say! But my taste buds just said no to them!

Grew up in a household that cooked in coconut, sesame and sunflower oil. I maintained the same. My husband’s dad said they used ground nut oil! I am still considering it.

That said, my favorite one of all is the sesame oil. I love the taste! The smell is so good and I enjoy cooking with it!

Yes, that is what we used this week for our cooking video. We made our famous vatha kuzhambu or spicy sauce with brinjal simmered in this sesame oil. It is also called Nalla ennai. Nalla means good and ennai is oil! The right amount adds the flavor to the sauce and tastes so good with rice.

Sesame oil is also gingelly oil!

Two months, I have been consistent in cooking with my son and making videos! Touchwood we keep the streak on.

It does go well with potatoes!

  1. This is such a warm and grounded reflection.

What I really love here is how you gently move from the “big world” concerns to something so intimate and real—your kitchen, your memories, and the everyday joy of cooking. It brings things back to what actually sustains us.

    1. Thank you! As a person running a household the big oil does look small.

  2. Nutrition experts seem to think that no added oil is healthy, but I think people have to enjoy their lives and food is one of the most important ways of doing that. Moderation is key. Here’s hoping the cooking streak with your son continues!

  3. You should only use oil which your system is used to. That is what the experts say. For Bengalis ut us mustard oil, ghee and white oil. I used rice bran for the latter. Sunflower oil will do too.

    1. I tried olive oil after coming to the States, but I did not like the taste. I settled for coconut oil, sesame oil and sunflower oil. Thanks for the tip.

  4. Your meal looks delicious, Ganga. I don’t cook often with coconut oil but sesame oil, in small doses, is so fragrant!
