Dawn of new year, புத்தாண்டு

It is Tamil New Year for us when the day dawns tomorrow! So what do we do? According to my husband’s family other than a great meal nothing huge. But my family has some roots in neighboring state of Kerala. The influence I set up what is called a Vishu Kanni near my pooja alter. Technically Vishu it seems is celebrated on the 15th, I just went and mixed two states’ culture tonight itself!

Usually I drag my young man to help me out but it was a long day for both of us. I let him sleep and I set up the alter. An alter set up with fruits, vegetables, grains and money signifying a prosperous New Year! A special flower in yellow color is used in Kerala on this day. I got what was available here.

Thanking Lord Krishna for giving me the energy after a long day to set this up. These do bring back childhood memories. Remember getting money from my grandfather called Vishu kai neetam early in the morning. Yes, my husband’s family doesn’t follow that tradition but my second kid growing up knew this was a money festival!

Happy Vishu and Happy Tamil Puthandu to all my friends and family.
