Muthappan and Thiruvappan

In my blog late last night yesterday I mentioned I felt some kind of happiness in the temple. Lord Venkateshwara, the main deity is a Vishnu incarnation.

Today a blogger mentioned she had bought an instant pot. With gas shortage in India, people are trying to buy other modes of cooking gadgets. My aunt had asked me about the instant pot a few days back. Today, I remembered replying her back saying that is one staple in my house. She had not messaged me back again about the same. So I asked her if she did buy one. Along with the reply she did tell me her family were at a prayer service to a Hindu deity, Muthappan, a Vishnu incarnate. This deity is unique to North Malabar region of Kerala. The reason she mentioned is because I had worked in that part of the world before marriage.

Immediately I went to my prayer alter and picked out a picture. On one side was Goddess Saraswathi (known by one and all) and the other of two deities. Them being Muthappan and Thiruvappan. When I did work in that region, me and my hostel friends visited the temple of them at Parassinikadavu Madappura. I had purchased that picture and had carried it with me all these years. As a young working girl, the trip was more of fun and me buying the picture was just a souvenir.

From Kerala India, to Chennai, India after marriage and to the US (three cities). The picture has traveled with me five houses and has been in my Prayer alter. Let me tell you, I do not belong to that congregation group of the temple nor do I practice any of their practices. But somehow the picture remained. My parents, my father in law and my husband have all worshipped at my prayer alter all these years. In fact my husband for nearly 30 years and have never asked me who the deities were in that picture.

My father in law and my mom have done extensive prayers in front of my alter and they too have never questioned the presence or what it was all about. But today after so many years I heard my aunt telling me she got the blessings of Muthappan a Vishnu incarnate. She would have never told me if I had not sent a message out of the blue asking her about the instant pot.

I finished the conversation with her saying I got Muthappan’s blessings. I also sent her the picture.

The right side picture is of Muthappan and Thiruvappan

Just a note, Muthappan is Vishnu incarnate and Thiruvappan a Shiva incarnate.

I am copying AI’s answer. We do not eat fish (being pure vegetarians) and do not consume alcohol in any form.

Sree Muthappan is a revered Hindu deity in North Malabar, Kerala, representing a fusion of Vishnu (Thiruvappan/Valiya Muthappan) and Shiva (Vellattam/Cheriya Muthappan). Worshipped through the unique Theyyam art form at Parassinikadavu Madappura, this deity symbolizes the downtrodden, with rituals offering toddy and fish rather than traditional Brahminical offerings.

God works in different ways. I need all kinds of blessings and I am happy to have received the same. I need that energy for the work that is ahead of me.

  1. I love the story behind this picture. So deeply personal and meaningful.

And I love the Instant Pot. I use it at least once a week. Salmon congee is the best.

  2. A meaningful journey. I am curious about the instant pot though. Have never heard of it. Recently, I read a book in which the backdrop is of Kerala and the basic concept is Vishnu and Shiva are not different but the same residing in one another – Harhara. Your post and the photos of the deities in your altar reminded, rather reinforced the same belief.

    1. Instant pot is an electric pressure cooker. Healthy cooking.
Hari and Hara are all the same right?
