A page from my past

When was the first time you really felt like a grown up (if ever)?

My grandfather was a hard worker. He meticulously saved money and was very careful in his investments. Every penny accounted and every transaction noted down. His past family experiences and his personal character made him be like this.

When I was in Eighth standard or should I say Eighth grade, he started training me to go to the bank on my own though a short walk, I deposited checks and withdrew money. I balanced his passbook and I knew most of the schemes post office offered that time. Yes, he would be nagging but he made me do that. The day I deposited eight hundred rupees I really felt grown up.

Even today me and my mom talk about him making us do his work. Yup it looked hard listening to an old man but we learnt a lot from those trips to the banks.

An orange scone from Panera Bread

Ha, he wouldn’t approve of our weekly breakfast trips to Panera Bread but had a really sweet tooth. His favorite sweet was jaangiri, something that looks like jilebi but he would say much more healthy. His birthday would have been past week and he would have been 110 years old. Maybe that is why when I saw the prompt I remembered him.

  2. This is a beautiful and touching memory. The way you describe your grandfather’s character—his discipline, his careful nature, and how he used everyday tasks to impart invaluable life lessons—paints a vivid picture. It’s a wonderful tribute that shows how his legacy isn’t just in the money he saved, but in the financial wisdom and the cherished memories he passed on to you. Thank you for sharing this.

  3. Wow, what a beautiful memory. It’s amazing how small moments—like depositing those eight hundred rupees—can make someone feel so grown up, and even more amazing how a grandfather’s careful ways and little lessons leave a lasting mark. Also, Panera scones and jaangiri, a sweet contrast he might’ve secretly enjoyed!
