It was too tiny

Yesterday I started my Navaratri series. My dolls are my prompt and the story behind them my blog.

Mrs and Mr Chettiyar, the rich businessman and his wife

My grandma used to say the idols in our house should not be more than the size of the thumb of the man of the house. I don’t think anyone asked why nor is it being followed. But one fine day on a trip to India 20 years ago me and my dad ended up with two small boxes of tiny dolls for my Navaratri golu.

My dad always wants to travel light and he forces us to do the same. Imagine me asking him to come shopping for these dolls in Chennai. The shopkeeper was so obedient to my dad’s request that none were more than 6 inches.

Chettiar and his wife, every Golu’s rich shopkeeper was my teeny tiny doll set of the lot. Just over an inch he and his wife have been putting up shop in my Golu for exactly 22 years.

Have I tried replacing him? No way. He has done multiple kind of business and this year he has vessels, fruits and vegetables.

Every life form is worshipped during Navaratri. Snake charmer and King Cobra find a place in many people’s golu. I have nothing against that profession but my fear of snakes I have never searched for that doll.

Here is a link to yesterday’s blog if you did miss 😊.

A Navaratri series!

See you tomorrow with another doll story.
