Nothing

What activities do you lose yourself in?

When you are a caretaker of a person you can’t let go of your guard. My son has severe behavior and sensory issues he needs a watchful eye all the time.

When I was in the hospital with my newborn younger one my dad was babysitting my special one. I called him for an update and then I told him what my boy would be doing. My dad was pretty surprised I was right.

Ever since the birth of my boy and his diagnosis I would say I have not immersed myself or lost myself in anything. Even if he is in the care of another person a portion of my thought process will be in an “on call mode”. By the way there is ton of PTSD associated with calls from school!

My husband keeps saying I should unwind myself. Yes, I do a lot of activities, attend classes yet I can’t let that go. Over the years my son is much more predictable and I know him well yet, I do not take that privilege!

For me and my boy it is “ Until Death do us apart”.

  1. A mother’s mind is like a candle that never stops burning, even when the room is bright. The world tells her to rest, but how can a lighthouse sleep when the sea is always moving? Even if the waves calm down, the lighthouse still watches, still waits. Maybe love is not just caring—it is being unable to stop caring, even when you try.

  2. Being a caretaker is a constant job for sure. I know the feeling that even when you are “free” you really aren’t. Respect to you, it is a role commonly undervalued.

    1. Thanks! It is really hard for people to understand unless they are in a caretaker’s shoes.

  3. Having a child with special needs is a challenge, but also makes me see life in a much different way. We are also learning something new every sinlge day. I agree about the, when you are free but not really free. Its so hard and sometimes more stressful than having them next to you. You are doing great!
