My first meal

Tell us about your first day at something — school, work, as a parent, etc.

How about for a change, about my first day in the US! Or maybe in the airport.

I landed in the US when the gas prices hovered around a dollar a gallon. I landed in the city of Los Angeles. My husband came to pick me up and I was so excited to meet him.

Then he got me food! He got me fries amd a soda! I am and was a foodie and was excited to eat American food. Boy! the food and the drink quantity really overwhelmed me. I couldn’t finish the soda and silently slipped it into the trash. I didn’t want to tell my husband I had wasted it! These items were so expensive in India and I thought it would have cost him a fortune!!!

Anyhow little did I know I was about to begin a journey of chip, candy and soda!

Over the years, I have purchased food from vending machines and have dumped half into the trash before giving it to my boy and have never felt bad! Yes, the half getting wasted is better than going into our tummies!

Lately I do notice the quantity to be less in fastfood shops and I am really grateful!

Indian junk, smaller packets just to satisfy the cravings.

  1. Yes, service sizes in the US are too large, and this leads to either waste or overconsumption, both of which are bad.

    1. There are places that don’t even sell a regular drink. It is just medium!!!

      1. And medium in US sizes is usually giant in other countries’s sizes!

I remember traveling to Bulgaria and going out for a burger and fries, and thinking how small the serving size looked like – but at the end of the meal I was satisfied but not too full like with US sized food.

  2. A friend had told us about the quantity of food in the US 🙂 Here we don’t have to throw away. Now in restaurants they pack and give if we cannot finish what we have ordered. That is a blessing.

    1. They do at restaurants too here. But the chip packets and soda cans are huge! Once a chip packet is opened you finish it! Same with popcorn at movie theaters 😀!
