When a woman or a girl visits the house she is offered a thamboolam for Navaratri. It usually contains things that are used by ladies like a comb or a mirror along with haldi(tumeric) and kumkum. In India, bananas and a coconut are also placed.

Anyhow coming to US, I found out buying a coconut is one of the hardest things. It travels from the Central American countries and you need to wait with anticipation as to how it would be if it is broken when the need comes.

Okay, what is that have to do with my Day 1 Navaratri celebrations. I have my family visiting me from India. I told them I would take them apple picking today. My idea, to pick apples to give it to my guests stopping by for Navaratri and at the same time showing my family the beautiful apple orchards! Yes I we in US just replaced the tradition of giving a coconut with an apple. Something that is local. Something that is guaranteed fresh😃!
