A self care assignment

In today’s constantly connected world, finding solitude has become a lost art. But spending time on your own gives you the chance to revitalize your body and your mind at the same time. Being by yourself with no distractions gives you the chance to clear your mind, focus, and think more clearly. It also gives your body permission to slow down and rest. For this activity, carve out 3-5 hours just for yourself. If possible, try to unplug from your cell phone, and do what you can to stay silent during this time. You can spend the time doing anything that you find restful—walk in nature, read a book, listen to music, even practice yoga. The bottom line is to take some time JUST FOR YOU!! And remember to bring your journal so you can write and reflect while you’re on your own.

The above is my mindfulness course assignment for this week. It is called the weekly rejuvenator. The last module of this course dealt with self-care. As a mom to a very special son, I have ignored self-care for many, many years. My mom always said you need a wall to draw a picture, and your activities are making the wall weak. Yes, I had ignored my body for so many years. But I have understood it is okay to take care of myself.

My special boy’s birthday is this weekend, and I have no clue how I am going to do the assignment. A three- to five-hour me time with no cell phones looks like an impossible task. But I am not going to stress over it. Just put it in the back of my mind. Hopefully I would get that three-hour break and would be able to journal it. Wish me luck!
