It’s basketball 🏀

Bloganuary 2024, Day 2

Do you play in your daily life? What says “playtime” to you?

Okay, Today is a prompt that was given a different way a few weeks ago and I am going to give you the screenshot of what I wrote.

Now, other than this I was not a sports person, when my orthodox Grandmother told me I was too old to play with boys and girls out in the street, I didn’t miss a beat and hid myself with a book! During school P.T period I hid with my friend near a bathroom to escape from the torture of my P.T teacher.

Fast forward years, I had to play with accumulated compound interest of not playing all the years. My special boy was having a hard time catching a ball and he was almost eight years old! Ha ha, the years of therapy involved just play!

To improve his imagination we had to do pretend play games and my house was filled with toys so that he could pretend play! Mcdonald and Pizza Hut sets were his favorites and we made pizzas and milkshakes and had pretend ones.

Then came the board games of candyland and Hi Hi Cherry Ho! He enjoyed spilling everything everywhere and the tiny cherries pricked our foot! The candy land cards were his sensory toy but he finally learned to sit for board games!

A Diwali puzzle I am doing with my boy

Now thinking of today, all these activities ,my boy can now sit for Bingo games that he plays with his social group and come next week he will play Basketball for Special Olympics. Not a team game but skills development! It was hours of Vision and Occupational therapy that made him to shoot a basket and I am so proud of him. We just received his winter schedule yesterday and our playtime activity is going to be basketball! Okay, this is my boy’s play time! What about me? Oh, for a girl who was locked in her room with a book, I really make good baskets! I can dribble and pass the ball too! I let the clock run and my boy has to make 50 baskets in 30 minutes! I have to run for the ball so we do not waste time and his attention is not lost!

Practicing during rec night

I am really happy my boy is part of Special Olympics! We just enrolled last Fall and he did long distance walking and now winter he is going to do basketball for the first time, and I feel as if he is part of a NBA team!

Our indoor basketball, 8 years ago Christmas present

As I write the blog, my excitement has been so high! Maybe equivalent of watching a game in person and I have never been tired of taking my boy to shoot baskets! I was a short stout girl in school and that maybe the reason I was trying not to participate in any games🤔? Did I miss those opportunities? I do not know! Anyhow come next Monday I am going to have fun!

You seem to enjoy playtime, I too have relearned playing now that I have three young grandchildren. It is more fun playing and pretending than doing adult housekeeping.
