Walking

Last Sunday, we attended a walkathon. It was a 2 mile walk but the fall colors were so pretty. So, the drizzle did not bother us and it turned out wonderful.

Monday evening was our boy’s last Special Olympics long distance practice session. We had missed two practices and even though we continued to have a cold drizzle, we dropped in. Surprise, surprise, my son’s coach handed him a silver medal that he missed getting from an event he did with his Dad nearly ten days ago. It was our Wedding Anniversary and it was a momentous moment for us. (Me and my husband arguing back home as to why he did not stay for the medal ceremony has to be forgotten).

Now that he won a medal, we were so sincere that we took him to the gym all week and made him work on the treadmill. The traffic inside the gym has definitely increased. Happy to see so many kids playing in the basketball court and using the exercise machines instead of being hooked onto a tablet.

The medal is a hope that he can do better. We even have started looking for races on Thanksgiving Day (Turkey Trots). Looking onto one that may fit our budget.

Next weekend is Diwali. Diwali celebrations in India is something I really miss. The last one I did in India was nearly 18 years ago. We have special dinners, music programs, Temple organizing fireworks happening here and sweets being sold by so many people, but nothing can be equivalent to the vibe and shopping that happens in India.

Sweets

While we were in school, the day after Diwali was “color dress day”. We had uniforms through out the year, but the day after Diwali we wore our new dresses to school. Yes, Diwali and birthday were the only two days we got new dresses. So it was special. Yesterday I was watching a YouTube video and a family showed off their Diwali shopping and all their dresses were all same color. Yes, everyone had matching blue outfits from the baby, to her brother to the Grandma! Yes, they were all in uniforms. I was laughing out so loud. We hated uniforms in those days and now we are ready to wear matching clothes. But anyhow, today I went shopping for our family and ended up getting matching shirts for my boys and that included my husband.

Weekend looks beautiful here and we are in our walking mode and I have some plans. Yes, need to burn some calories that we will be adding with all the Diwali sweets. But I see lot of people sneezing around me and I think we all can expect some bug to catch us one time or the other. So having good health all through winter, I would call it a privilege.
