Navaratri is not even half way over I am seeing lot of videos as how to make sweets for Diwali. I am more of a savory person but I sit and watch some of these one minute videos as they slice and dice the final pieces, seems addictive to watch. They say it is easy to do but I think it is all just marketing for us to watch the same😃!

Most of the sweets have a lot of clarified butter and can be stored for a long time. Shelf life is great that these can be prepared for Navaratri and then distributed to the guests when they drop in. I am always tempted to make some and keep. But I usually drop that idea. My boy is also a savory kid but if his eating anxiety kicks in the sweets can be gone in a minute! So the shelf life doesn’t matter in our household.
So there is always the confusion as to what to offer to the guests who drop in. Age old custom is to offer different kinds of beans/lentils and we call it sundal. This is seasoned with salt and after offering to God we pack it for our guests. This seems to work in our house. My boy is helping me make the same and these are not addictive but healthy and when the guests drop in, I have something to share 😃.
The problem with these are you do not know how much they would yield once boiled. Some give you a lot like the green gram dal or some like kidney beans just remain the same. Some require overnight soaking and some do not. Also if you have a couple of cancellations we end up eating them too much and we all then know what too much beans can do.
So it is a fine line we are treading here. I even downloaded a cheat sheet online as to what to prepare every day so there is not much confusion. But nothing has gone according to plan. Isn’t that life? 😀
