Anyone who grew up eating curd rice would say their soul food or comfort food is curd rice. Rice with whole milk yogurt (curd) salt and seasonings like ginger and chilly add a taste that no other food can compensate.
Gluten and casein free food was suggested for my special boy when he was a kid. In fact all in autism and allergy world know about it. But our family cannot live without this comfort food and so we cheated on his diet. We took off his gluten and milk but kept the home made yogurt. In fact within 3 weeks of removing his cereal and milk and adding yogurt or curd rice to his morning breakfast we could see a change and even the school noticed. Anyhow we are not in any kind of diet and that is a different story!
After a long travel, you come home and crave this food. Rice and yogurt with mango pickles would be heaven at that point. You are sick with a stomach bug, Mom gives you watered down curd called buttermilk and rice which would again taste like heaven. You run out of lunch box ideas ,pack the curd rice with some potato chips you satisfy your partner. No wonder it is a soul food for many!
Most of the Indian Temples in US offer this soul food in canteen (thayir saadam) and my boy yesterday was adamant that he wanted to have that. We had decided to go to the nearby restaurant and told him he would make that for his lunch box and that is what he did today.
I know many who are vegans and use alternate forms and I love everyone of them, but for yogurt I am going to stay with good old cow milk yogurt!
