My community

What do you love about where you live?

To raise a special child, environment is very important. It is more than inside the four walls of the house.

We have created an atmosphere that my special boy thrives. But we are blessed to live in a community that accepts my son. He is accepted at our Community center and we have lot of programs that target special needs. I say that is a privilege and I am grateful for that.

My son is a young adult now. We moved when he was a teen. We got a house that could satisfy his hyper activity but as he grows the house though fifty years old with it’s yard provides a lot of learning opportunity for him.

Community is a huge part of any special needs parent. Being a caretaker is not easy. A smile exhibited by a neighbor to a program run by a non profit for special needs helps the parent.

My younger one is now in college and school district doesn’t matter for us anymore. But we are comfortable now in this place. If I can move my laundry to the second floor I love everything about my house and the community I live in.😊

A sensory playground

  1. Where you live looks great, Ganga. I’m glad there’s a sensory playground too. Where I grew up didn’t have any accessible play areas. I prefer the area we live in to the apartment. We fought for better wheelchair access to the building, but we rent the apartment and the landlady doesn’t want renovations to her apartment. We’ve been trying to move for years with no luck, but the area is wonderful. Here’s my blog post:

      1. I agree things are getting better and I noticed that SCOPE, a UK disability organization, has a current campaign for accessible playgrounds. There’s also one near us in Madrid.

      2. We have three baseball fields that are wheel chair accessible. And I see games taking place.

  3. My laundry is in the basement and we mostly live on the main floor. I try and remind myself that stairs are good exercise 🙄

    1. The problem is, the laundry is out of sight and out of mind😂. I keep forgetting about the clothes in the washer and dryer !
