Was today typical?
Yesterday my husband had a medical procedure that became a minor surgery. He is doing great now and on his way to recovery but it is not a typical day for us.
In fact as a family handling an young adult on the autism spectrum every day has it’s own challenges. But yesterday was a bit more complicated. It was an outpatient surgery yet that 8 hour period was long and the night was longer. I know many special needs family who have undergone much tougher situations than what I went yesterday and I bow my head to them.
The next two weeks my husband has to take care of himself. He is already feeling guilty about not helping me and I keep saying that it is okay since if he complicates himself by straining we will be in much deeper trouble. I think it gives my special boy an opportunity to learn that certain things that we may not have done in a normal situation. Yesterday he was with his Dad in the recovery room who was wearing a hospital gown instead of his jeans for more than two hours. He saw his Dad being in a wheel chair and needing support to walk.
So today morning he saw a resting Dad, Mom doing certain things his Dad helps him with and some routines have a changed. We have some things for him in place so to see to it that most of the routines are intact but not all can be duplicated.
My boy and me now have the added responsibility of watering our garden which my husband was in charge of. I think that is one skill he is going to master the next two weeks since my husband has been given strict instructions not to do strenuous activities for the next two weeks. I think this is the silver lining and I am keeping my fingers crossed.
So to answer WordPress prompt, not only today but the next two weeks are going to be a little different from normal for our entire family. 😊
