Changing Names

If you had to change your name, what would your new name be?

I was named after my paternal Grandmother. So officially that was my name. But I was given another name too, and I was called using that name too. When my marriage was fixed, my father in law wanted to change my name. Okay, this made my Grandmother so angry. It seems my in law’s place had that tradition of changing names. I too was furious about it.

Mine was an arranged marriage, decided by elders. Yet, there were lot of difference of opinions. I think the name changing idea was an authority exhibited by my father in law and nothing more. My new name did not stick even though my father in law tried to call me many times. I think it didn’t have any significance.

My Dad just said once, while I was struggling with my 5 year old special one, “maybe if you had changed the name when your father in law asked, maybe it would have changed your fate and maybe you would not struggle like this”. I just smiled at him. We were trying every treatment on this planet and my Dad had this thought process. Our human minds think really hard during tough situations.

My Grandmother was a very strong woman. It was her Grandmother’s name and I vaguely remember so many stories she told me that were associated with her name. Some vaguely remembered stories were about one ancestor running away from the house and going to Varanasi and coming back with a vessel of water from River Ganges (whom I am named after), and following that the child born was named Ganga. Then, the baby previously born before my Grandmother who was named Ganga died and only after three years my Grandmother was given this name. On and on I had listened to her.

So to answer WordPress question I am really proud of my name which has passed generations. I had a chance to change it and was even forced to, but it did not happen. So , even if I am given an opportunity I will not change my name.

  3. What a great thing to think about.
My birth given name was Mary Anne Christiano. (“Mary” after my beloved grandmother, but my name was Mary Anne. It was confusing, some thought my name was “Mary” and that “Anne” was my middle name. They were wrong.
When I married, I changed the appearance of my first name to “Maryanne” so it would no longer be confusing. After all, my Grandmother was “Mary” and no one could fill her shoes! 🙂
I used one pen name, for one of my books, Krystianna Mercury. It’s a cool name and I was going to change it to that at one point, but decided not too.

    1. Thanks to wordpress for this prompt. It really bought memories. Yes if you know your Grandmother and you love her then as you age you are too proud of it. As you said that shoes can’t be filled 😊.

Hi Uma, I have to admit I was confused by your name, I thought it was Uma but I’ve seen you use Ganga too after the special River. So why do you go by Uma too? I don’t think you have your special one because you would not change your name, I think your special one is a gift from God because he is such a good boy and you have learned so much about compassion and love by how well you care for him. My name is a family name too. My name is Kimerle Anne. My first name is my Mother’s maiden name of Kimmerle, so my Mom took one m out of her maiden name and named me Kimerle. Anne is after St. Anne, the Blessed Mother’s Mother. A lot of people misspell or mispronounce my first name as Kimberly because that is how people know that name. But they are wrong, it is Kimerle without a b, a family name.

    1. Kim my name is Ganga. Since my Grandma was Ganga they called me Uma since it was a disrespectful to call older people by their name.

I just called my Grandma Grandma. And I never addressed my Mother or Father in law by their first name. I called them Mr. And Mrs. Viccaro.

  8. I’ve mused on changing my name many times over the years. I am named for my maternal and paternal grandmothers. I don’t know if changing my name would change who I am now, but it is intriguing to think about.

  9. Yeah, I too have quite a small story behind my name. I was already named before my birth as one of my dad’s aunts used to get devi in her dreams and before my birth the devi said that there is going to be a birth of a girl and she should be named samiksha. And that’s how I was named when I grew up I started hating my name cause it was a big spelling but now I love my name as my late mother used to call me by my name and now she is no more but her voice saying my name is stuck in my head.💓
