How about an authentic South Indian Breakfast?

It is almost 6 am and I see this prompt. I am in no mood for a snack but a hot breakfast. Our recent Christmas vacation we stumbled onto this Indian Vegetarian cuisine. It opened up early and offered an authentic South Indian breakfast of idli, vada, pongal, poori, dosa and filter coffeee.

We were leaving San Diego to Phoenix amd did not know about this until we reached the restaurant. We decided we should try their mini tiffin option and leave on our road trip. We did pack dosas and vadas for all but finding a rest area was hard on the way. The gas station parking lot served as a place at Yuma, Arizona and had our lunch from takeout box with wind hitting us. (Sand).

What snack would you eat right now?

Indian restaurants do not offer breakfast in our area. We get all this for lunch or dinner.
It was a surprise treat for our kids.
South Indian filter coffee, a taste by itself.

The restaurant was a last minute find. By the way California is not cheap. And yes today morning my tastebuds crave for this breakfast.

Vadas were their specialty! But I can make better vadas. Pongal, harvest festival is coming up and I know what I am going to snack on that day.

  1. Ah, what a vivid and wonderful memory you’ve shared! There’s something almost magical about those unexpected travel finds—the kind that linger in your mind and on your taste buds long after the journey ends.

Your description of stumbling upon authentic South Indian breakfast just before a road trip, with mini tiffins, filter coffee, and the windswept “sand picnic” at a gas station in Yuma—it feels both adventurous and deeply human. Those unplanned moments, shared with loved ones over packed dosas and vadas while the desert wind tries to join your meal, often become the stories we hold closest.

It says something beautiful about your sense of discovery that even now, back in the rhythm of daily life, your cravings return to that warm, fragrant breakfast: soft idlis, crispy vadas, comforting pongal, and the deep, smooth embrace of filter coffee. It wasn’t just a meal—it was the start of a day filled with motion and possibility, wrapped in the scent of spices and steam.

And yes, California may not be cheap—but some experiences, like that last-minute stop in a quiet early morning, are truly priceless.

Here’s to mornings that taste like adventure, and to cravings that remind us of the journeys still to come. ☀️🍛☕
