Competition

Every year I make வடாம் (vadaam). A rice snack that is sun dried and can be stored boxes to be deep fried later. This year I have not found time to do the same. I did travel and also the weather was not perfect. More rainy days than normal. I heard someone talking today that Thursday is going to be hot! I checked my app and saw both Wednesday and Thursday are going to be perfect for the same. I really do not have any competition to do that or any pressure or peer pressure 😀!

We harvested some beans today. My husband said, not bad for the little work we did when we saw the harvest size. I said, yes it is a hobby and that is what it matters. We could buy more beans for the money we invested. But this is all a different kind of pleasure. I would say hobbies are something that comes out of passion.

As I sit in a park and write this blog, I hear cheers for a baseball game. Sports has always been competitive from time immemorial. I remember a time when my younger one did recreational soccer. Everyone got a medal and equal play. Even then in those games parents would be nervous about their kids’ performance self included.

Last week when my special man did his America mile race, there were so many categories including professionals. Everyone were there trying to improve their timing even though it said “Let’s have fun”. Anyhow me and my husband like these races since it makes us push our son which we would not normally do in a park. When an entire group is running or walking at a good speed we automatically push ourselves to do the same. Maybe that is called healthy competition.

Last year I took some courses on Coursera. I needed to finish it within a particular time period otherwise I would be charged extra. So I pushed and finished off the classes within that time span.

But I do see competitiveness for anything and everything from looks to house keeping. Even though it doesn’t yield a big monetary profit there are hobbies that are becoming competitive and I feel that need not happen. But who thinks about it all. Maybe we human beings are genetically engineered to compete and compare ourselves with others. We even made story about a turtle and hare going for a race!

Anyhow I loved the concept of Individialized Education Plan that my son had in school. I think I need it for my life. I need to improve and be consistent and constant and not compete and improve myself.
