Nearly two decades back, I learnt about a Hindu festival. Yes, all the years growing up in an orthodox household I did not learn about it, but from a friend in the United States. We were inside a temple when she opened her purse and showed me pair of gold earrings she had got for her daughter. She told me it was Akshaya tritiyai and buying gold on that day was auspicious.
Wow, there were no second thoughts for me and I had to get gold. Yes, for a couple of years I did diligently do what she had told me at the templethat day π!Buying gold!
As I grew old, my interest specifically in gold dwindled down but I became curious about the festival. Yes, just like that a festival popped up and every store in India was putting up sale.
The more orthodox people did say, the festival had nothing to do with gold and it was for giving charity. Infact I received forwarded messages as to how the charity should be given.
This year the festival falls on April 30th. Gold is at an all time high. I am curious how many are going to buy gold and how many are going to give charity.
As for me, it is another day, but if my husband surprises me with gold I will not say a βNoβ.
