Hospitality

What aspects of your cultural heritage are you most proud of or interested in?

I am unpacking my box after a trip to India. I got dolls for my Navaratri. Yes, the festival Navaratri is very close to my heart. I just have one week to put up my huge display. But I am mentally prepared for the task.

I had purchased most of the dolls online and it was shipped to me from India. My India trip was a surprise so I didn’t have any plans of getting any more dolls. Anyhow the streets were filled with dolls and I picked up tiny ones.

So here is a set that I purchased around which I can create a theme.

Part of a marriage lunch scene

Unlike the Western world, in India there are no RSVPs for marriage. Feeding people for the marriage is considered a good deed and people feel proud doing it. Traditionally the food is served on a banana leaf (eco friendly).

I am really proud of this aspect. In my language tamil it is called Virunthombal, hospitality or entertaining the guests.

There is a saying “வயிறு வாழ்த்தும்”. That is the filled up stomach blesses the couple. What a wonderful statement.

Anyhow my trip didn’t involve any marriages. I really craved to eat in one. Maybe the next time.
