Final day of our challenge

What are your favorite types of foods?

Three weeks back the prompt was a food question and I challenged myself to cook with my boy for 10 days continously and then I increased it to a three week challenge.

It was like a cooking workshop at home and it took a lot of energy. I tried not to blog about it but I ended up doing about the project than any other thing.

As I reflect we worked on cleaning and cutting vegetables, putting groceries in containers and even cleaning up the space after cooking.

My husband joined me slowly and I have to thank him too, since he meticulously did the dishwasher. My boy unloads but when you have non stop cooking it really is a job. My boy learnt not only to pack his lunch box but he was able to pack his spoons, napkins and snacks. I had to come up with different ideas and there were days I was not sure what to cook. So it was mental work out for me too. In fact we didn’t eat out much at all.

For the penultimate day, I ordered a new pancake or uthappam maker online. That is my boy’s favorite dish and we both enjoyed making the carrot and onion uthappam.

We had an ISP meeting in between this whole challenge. My son’s behavior therapist told me one of her client who is in her sixties and is in a group home diligently cooks her Mom’s recipes with the help of her aide and asked me to continue the work. I think that was a big encouragement for me that pushed me further to complete the challenge.

We started a written journal and on days I was tired he wrote on his white board. I also want him to type and make a journal too.

My boy has severe anxiety and ocd around food. But the more he cooked I saw him not craving for it. Fried food are his weakness and I saw him waiting patiently. I saw him squeeze lemon or add the coriander (cilantro) like a professional chef.

Now that he has done a workshop the real work starts soon. He will be taught to make one dish per week and he will be given the freedom to add or take away any ingredient. That way he learns to make his own recipe.

I was asked to start a channel for his cooking from some of my friends and family. It is a hard task but I will continue to post his cooking on his page as he continues this journey.

Today we made a no onion and garlic side dish and we are off to a picnic lunch. It seals our twenty one day challenge. Check it on his page. Thanks to my friends and family who saw all the videos liked and commented. It was really encouraging. 🙏

  1. I think cooking is a skill that requires a lot of thinking, first decide what to make, do I have all the ingredients, measuring and chopping and how much time do I have. I think Ani is doing really well and learning a lot from you. Plus he can help you cook and clean up.
