A box of cashews

What would you change about modern society?

I have boxes filled with cashews and walnuts on top of my box in which I store my rice. Nuts are supposed to be one of the expensive commodities and too much intake is also not good. So these are stored in smaller containers and my 20 lb bag of rice in a big container.

I buy two kinds of rice one, Sona Masoori and another one a hand pound brown rice. I rarely use basmati rice. On Friday, I got messages saying India has banned the export of all kinds of rice except basmati rice. Sunday evening my husband went to the Indian store and called me to say the stock of rice bags other than basmati rice was all gone.

People rushing to Indian stores

I decided that minute, yes monsoon rains have been crazy in many parts of the world and a ban or a price increase maybe necessary but I am not going to yield to the hoarders or price gouging selfish business people. I told my husband to pick up alternative things that I can use instead of rice. Many know the craze that went around for toilet papers and hand sanitizers when the pandemic began. I still have three whole big bottles of hand sanitizers in my house.

Modern society’s attitude has not changed and it remains the same, being selfish to the extend hoarding staple things . How am I going to expect an attitude of love towards special needs people or going green to save the earth when basic human attitude is not being fulfilled.

Anyhow my box of cashews seems to be much cheaper and more available than a bag of 20 lb rice. We have had similar situations that ended up having the price of rice increased until then I am going to be strong and not yield to fears. A year back I was asked by my brother to stock up on cooking oil because of the war in Ukraine. I never did. In fact my oil consumption reduced and it was good for our health. Will do the same now. Maybe our carbohydrate consumption will go down and a lifestyle change towards good may happen 😊.

Hi Uma, what is different with Indian rice that you could not use white or brown rice found in grocery stores like Giant Eagle or Trader Joe’s. I just wondered.

    1. Every rice tastes different. There so many varieties even in India and every region of the country uses a different one.

  3. Wasn’t aware of the impending shortage of rice. I see Patel Brothers and I do buy my nuts and sometimes mangoes there 😊.

    1. Other than Basmati all other kinds have been banned for export from India. Yes rice has been failed even in China. Let’s see what happens.

      1. Basmati is my rice of choice so maybe that’s why I haven’t noticed. Besides I buy a huge bag that lasts for almost a year because in my house we’re not big fans of rice.

  4. We’ve had some issues getting brown rice, just plain American brown rice. I wonder if that’s connected to the situation in India?

      1. Didn’t know this. Thanks for the link. My husband is NOT going to be happy about this. I’m a bit more adaptable when it comes to rice.

Right decision. I would also suggest that this is the right time to try and switch over to millets- various varieties. An additional factor is that millet production consumes less groundwater compared to other grains.
